| What
is it? Why is it important?
Project
management maturity is all about aligning an organisations PM capability
with its strategic need and direction. It's about taking a holistic view
of the way projects are set-up, run and measured - and it's about learning
and sharing across the board - not in pockets of isolation. This is important
because research has shown that if organisations take this approach they
not only increase their project management capability, but the success
rate of their projects too.
Why
Are Projects So Important These days?
Because the
definition of efficiency has changed. In a complex world not everything
can be predicted and planned for. Surprises are inevitable and efficiency
in business now means having the ability to react quickly to opportunities
or threats. Projects are the means by which unique solutions to unique
problems are found, and this has become a necessary part of business today.
With a mature Project Management Office (PMO),
organisations find that their project capabilities and project success
rates increase.
Organisational
Project Management Maturity
Project Management
Maturity is a new concept and it reflects the extent to which an organisation
provides a centralised platform to nurture, support and standardise the
way it runs projects and programs. It's about having a project management
system to ensure this, rather than leaving individual projects
to their own devices. Its important because it enables companies to have
higher project success rates across the board than would otherwise be
possible.
The
Project Management Institute has released it's Organisational Project
Management Maturity Model (OPM3) standard to deal with this important
organisational issue.
